Why we Include a Workshop in our TAE40122 Course

For anyone pursuing the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, one of the most complex and often misunderstood components is validation—a vital process that ensures the integrity and quality of training and assessment practices. As crucial as it is, this task can be overwhelming for learners, especially when attempting to complete it without the support of a structured workshop delivered by their Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

ASSESSMENT AND VALIDATION REQUIREMENTS IN THE TAE40122

As part of the TAE40122 course, learners must demonstrate both the ability to assess competence and participate in and lead validation activities. These are addressed through two core units of competency:

  • TAEASS412 – Assess Competence
  • TAEASS413 – Participate in Assessment Validation

These activities ensure learners gain the skills and experience required to assess others in a fair, reliable, and compliant way—and to maintain the integrity of assessment practices within the VET sector.

Validation is not about reassessing a student or re-marking their work. Rather, it’s about reviewing the assessment materials and practices to ensure they align with training package requirements and industry expectations.

These requirements are specifically covered under the TAEASS413 – Participate in assessment validation unit of competency, which is a core unit in the TAE40122 qualification. It outlines the essential skills and knowledge required to actively contribute to and lead validation activities in a compliant and collaborative way.

In addition to validation, TAE40122 learners must also demonstrate the ability to assess competence as part of the TAEASS412 – Assess Competence unit. This unit focuses on carrying out fair, flexible, valid, and reliable assessments that align with industry and training package expectations.

Together, these two units—TAEASS412 and TAEASS413—require learners to complete a series of practical, evidence-based activities, as outlined below.

PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS IN THE TAE40122

TAEASS413 – Participant in assessment validation

Performance Evidence – Total of 9 validation assessment tasks

The individual must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • participate in the pre-assessment validation of at least 3 assessment tools before they are first used with candidates
  • participate in the validation of:
    • the above 3 assessment tools after they have been used to assess candidates
    • 3 assessment judgements by different assessors, where the same tool has been used for all 3 judgements
    • the practices undertaken in the course of the above assessment judgements, and identification of at least 2 recommendations for improvement.

Assessment Conditions (this is what your trainer must witness/assess as conditions being met)

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a real or simulated vocational education and training environment.

This includes access to:

  • an experienced VET teacher, trainer and assessor to lead validation activities
  • other assessors to participate in validation activities
  • assessment system
  • assessment tools for pre-validation
  • assessment tools for post-validation and samples of completed learner work and results
  • assessment records, including evidence collected and assessment judgements.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

This means to compliantly satisfy the requirements of the units of competency, you will need access to a TAE-qualified trainer, experienced in validations, along with at least 2 other TAE trainers to participate in the validation process. All 9 validation tasks are covered in RAM’s 3-day virtual workshop, led by our qualified trainer/assessor, taking the responsibility off the students to organise these tasks.  (Be aware of providers not helping with this requirement.)  Most people would struggle to find 1 qualified trainer, let alone 3, to sit with you for 9 entire validation tasks. That is a lot to put onto friends, family or co-workers who are qualified – without a workshop included, these sessions would also need to be video recorded so that the RTO’s assessor can watch the validation process, making sure the session is lead correctly and the learner is participating satisfactorily.

TAEASS412 – Assess Competence

Performance Evidence

The individual must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • conduct a total of at least 6 assessments, at least 1 of which must use recognition of prior learning (RPL).

The above assessments must be for 3 different candidates against all requirements specified in at least 2 different units of competency from a nationally recognised training package or accredited course. The same 2 units may be used for each candidate.

In the course of the above assessments, the individual must:

  • use current and validated assessment tools
  • customise the assessment process of at least 1 of the above candidates to:
    • contextualise for candidate’s work role and environment, and
    • make reasonable adjustments for special needs where this will not compromise the requirements of the unit of competency, or explain and justify a reasonable adjustment that could be made in at least one of the above assessments
  • make assessment judgements according to vocational education and training (VET) regulatory requirements
  • identify and apply at least 3 changes to improve own assessment practice based on feedback from candidate and self-reflection.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a real or simulated vocational education and training environment. Evidence gathered for assessment may include that collected in real time or via a submitted recording.

This includes access to:

  • assessment system
  • current and validated assessment tools, including access to a provided RPL kit.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards. They must hold a Diploma of Vocational Education and Training or a higher education qualification in Adult Education, not just the Cert IV Training & Assessment.

The Assess Competence unit requires participants to complete 6 assessments on 3 different participants – each participant completes 2 assessments each, this must be done under supervision.  For this reason, these tasks are also covered in the workshops included with RAM Training Services’ TAE40122 course.

WHY IT’S CHALLENGING WITHOUT A WORKSHOP
  1. Access to Other Assessors
Validation requires collaboration with other qualified trainers/assessors. If a learner is studying remotely or independently, they may struggle to:

    • Find the required number of assessors for role-plays or validation meetings,
    • Receive timely feedback or guidance, and
    • Understand how a “real-world” validation meeting should be run.
  2. Understanding the Process
Reading about validation is one thing—applying it is another. Without live demonstrations, discussions, or examples from experienced facilitators:

    • The process can seem overly complex,
    • Learners may misinterpret requirements,
    • Submissions may be incomplete or incorrect.
  3. Lack of Confidence
Validation requires using technical language, training package analysis, and compliance terminology. In a workshop, learners can:

    • Ask clarifying questions,
    • Observe how others approach validation tasks, and
    • Gain confidence through practice and feedback.
  4. Access to Resources
Workshops provide curated validation tools, templates, sample assessments, and realistic scenarios. Without these, learners may:

    • Spend extra time creating documents from scratch,
    • Use outdated or non-compliant templates,
    • Miss critical components needed for successful assessment.
HOW RAM TRAINING SERVICES MAKES IT EASIER

At RAM Training Services, our face-to-face and virtual workshops are designed to demystify validation and assessment.  We understand that some students don’t have the time to sit in a 5-day workshop, so we developed a shortened 3-day version for our Distance Learning students, to ensure that the most challenging practical activities are simplified and covered, while still being able to complete the majority of the course as self-paced distance learning study.

During our 3-day workshop, the practical assessment tasks for the following units are covered:

TAEASS412 – Assess Competence
TAEASS311 – Contribute to assessment
TAEASS413 – Participant in assessment validation

The 3 units above have the most intensive amount of practical requirements that we believe students will struggle to complete on their own, and here at RAM we want to support our students in completing their assessment tasks without the challenge of having to find a qualified trainer/complete work placement.

Be mindful when researching providers, read the fine print, and make sure they provide the support needed to complete these units or you may find yourself stuck and unable to complete the qualification!  It’s easier to sell a course with no classroom attendance required, but for this qualification, it’s also extremely difficult to actually complete the course without it.

We are proud of the service and support provided for all RAM students, and believe we have created the best delivery method to be time effective, cost effective, and with the best support possible, to help our students reach their goal.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Assessment and Validation are core skills in a trainer/assessor’s toolkit—and for good reason. It upholds the standards of the vocational education and training sector. But without the guidance of a supportive, workshop-based environment, many learners find the task daunting.

If you’re working towards your TAE40122, don’t go it alone. Joining an RTO-run workshop like ours at RAM Training Services can make all the difference in your understanding, confidence, and ultimate success.
